Nine Crows

Nine crows in a circle,
Staring down at me,
My faith, this day, is tested,
If I failed, so let it be,
For I am but a soldier,
Not a preacher or a saint,
But when this war is over,
I’ll not fight again.

At home the snow is falling
I can feel it in my soul,
I hope they gathered in the harvest,
Before the season grew too cold,
For I would not see my children,
Cry from hunger or from pain,
And when this war is over,
I’ll not fight again.

Chorus:
Out of need and out of duty,
I’ve cast my soul to chance,
I’ve set the fires burning,
And I’ve ordered the advance,
But alone within the darkness,
Hidden from the flame,
I think of distant places,
And those who bear my name.

The fear of the morning,
And the battle that was to come,
Has settled down to silence,
No one here cares who lost or won,
And I am just a soldier,
And my uniform is stained,
And when this war is over,
I’ll not fight again.

Chorus:
Out of need and out of duty,
I’ve cast my soul to chance,
I’ve set the fires burning,
And I’ve ordered the advance,
But alone within the darkness,
Hidden from the flame,
I think of distant places,
And those who bear my name.

I draw my hands together,
Though I don’t know how to pray,
Still, Lord, don’t allow my children,
To learn how to live this way,
Let these nine crows above me,
Have whatever flesh remains,
For when my soul has left me,
I’ll not fight again.

Chorus:
Out of need and out of duty,
I’ve cast my soul to chance,
I’ve set the fires burning,
And I’ve ordered the advance,
But alone within the darkness,
Hidden from the flame,
I think of distant places,
And those who bear my name.

Chorus:
Out of need and out of duty,
I’ve cast my soul to chance,
I’ve set the fires burning,
And I’ve ordered the advance,
But alone within the darkness,
Hidden from the flame,
I think of distant places,
And those who bear my name.
